I am completely crushed by the death of Adam Yauch. Going completely by memory from a music scene 1,200 miles away, I remember the early 80’s Beastie Boys trying to fit into the New York music scene. They tried metal (complete with long hair), punk rock, and Cro-Mags style hard core as a 4 piece band. Even after Adam Horowitz replaced 2 people they still continued their previous experiments. Then they tried rap as a joke on their “Cookie Puss” 12” EP. It sealed their fate. My DuPont house room mate and Sonic Warp partner, Paul Schwartzberg, bought “Cookie Puss” at Oarfolkjokeopus and played it for us at an aftershow party. I have been hooked ever since. 1983/84?…we had never heard anything like this…except for the Warlock Pinchers.
